How You Love Me

Music video

Directed by Robin Piree for Hardwell

A man picks up his date at her house across Rotterdam’s iconic Erasmus Bridge. For the next 3+minute, in over 60 short scenes, we watch the couple fall in love and start a life together – all in the two front seats of the car and filmed from a single camera angle looking directly at the windshield. They drop each other off at work, go on vacation, visit her parents, go to the carwash and generally drive around a lot until someday, at some point, the magic between them wears off.

For years, Robin Piree travelled around the world with Dutch superstar DJ and producer Hardwell as a videographer, creating content and directing two feature-length documentaries about the artist. Ironically, Hardwell doesn’t appear in ‘How You Love Me’, the video Robin directed. Neither do featured artists Conor Maynard and Snoop Dogg, allowing the director to execute his own idea.

‘We went from briefing to treatment in less than 72 hours, and two weeks later the video was done,’ Robin says. Because a certain auto manufacturer was originally going to sponsor the video, Robin was asked to write a treatment involving a car. When the product placement deal fell through, he used someone’s 1996 Peugeot and called an actual couple he had previously worked with to play the leads. ‘They’re both models, not actors. But they were able to argue on cue, it was fantastic. We shot it in two days: one day of driving and one day standing still.’

After ten years of working in the dance music world, Robin took a step back in 2015. ‘I wanted more depth, I wanted to create stories. This is what I’ve wanted to do for a long time.’
